Why Does Mold Grow Inside Houses?

Mold is present throughout our environment.  Mold spores are transported through the air, on clothes, skin, animals, and other ways.  Every home is going to have mold spores in the air and on surfaces, it is part of nature.  The problem is when the spores start actively growning into colonies.  This happens when mold spores combine with moisture and a food source.  There are many ways that this can happen.

 

Moisture: Water can become an issue in your home in a number of ways. 

  1. Plumbing leaks
  2. Roof leaks
  3. Seepage
  4. Humidity issues
  5. Ventilation issues
  6. Condensation
  7. Other

Air Technology looks for these sourcs of moisture during inspections as the key to long term mold remediation success is control of moisture.

Food Source: Like any living thing, mold needs food to survive.  Your home presents many building materials that mold can grow on. 

  1. Wood lumber - Framing, joists, cabinets, etc.
  2. Drywall - Paper and paint on the surface
  3. Carpeting
  4. Fabric - Furniture, curtains, clothes, etc.
  5. Paint - Painted block walls support mold growth

Non-organic materials may have mold growth on accumulated dirt on the surface.  This includes porcelain, rock, and metal surfaces.
